Auditor Warns of Dog License Scams
Fraudulent Websites Discovered
Mahoning County - Mahoning County Auditor Ralph Meacham is warning county residents to beware of fraudulent websites claiming to sell county dog licenses.
At least two fake websites have been discovered, including ohdog-license.com and ohiodoglicense.com.
These sites claim to sell dog licenses for all Ohio counties; however, no dog licenses are sold for the entire state. Dog licensing is handled on a county level. Renewal notices were mailed by the Auditor's Office on Friday December 6, 2019 for Mahoning County. Auditor Meacham is urging residents to let dog owners know now is the time to renew and only directly through the County.
In Mahoning County, all new dog licenses must be purchased in person at one of the agents on the attached list or through the mail to the Auditor's Office or Dog Warden's Office. Dog licenses can be renewed the same way, but the only website to renew a dog license online is the Mahoning County Auditor's website at https://dogtags.mahoningcountyoh.gov/.
"It is unfortunate that these types of scams exist, but as Auditor, my staff and I are always working to protect the taxpayers and residents of Mahoning County," Meacham stated.
Auditor Meacham encourages taxpayers to call his office if they encounter any websites that appear to be fraudulent. Staff is always available to verify if a site is an official county website.
